1992 Canadian Tour Order of Merit winner Chris DiMarco closed with a 2-under 69 for his third PGA Tour victory in as many seasons. He was cruising along with a four-stroke lead with eight holes to play until hitting into the water on No. 11 for double bogey, which began his slide. Protecting against the water on the right of the 12th green, he hit into the left bunker and took bogey, then hit into the water to the right on the next hole, leading to another bogey.
He recovered just in time on Sunday, hitting his tee shot within 18 inches for a birdie on the 16th that allowed him to catch Kenny Perry. He pulled ahead when Perry took bogey on the 17th. "I like kind of not being known and just kind of sneaking in there every now and then," DiMarco said. "But I've always believed in myself. I feel like I have just kind of arrived."
Perry, who earlier missed a 18-inch birdie putt, had a three-putt bogey on the 17th and couldn't recover. He finished with a 70. "I was so proud of that kid," Perry said. "He gutted it out. Most guys would have folded up shop after a double bogey on 11, a bogey on 12 and hitting in the water on 13. Most guys would not have had enough moxie and enough guts to hang in there.”
