Coming off a three-week break after the Masters, Mike returned to competition yesterday at the Cottonwood Valley Course in Texas. Struggling with his short game, Mike shot a 5-over par, scoring a total of 75 for the first round. Mike will have to make up for that today by shooting at least a 5-6 under par to keep his consecutive cuts streak intact. Mike has played 14 tournaments in a row this season without missing weekend play.

Selkirk, Manitoba’s Glen Hnatiuk opened with a 76 and Calgary resident Stephen Ames fired an even-par 70. Bryce Molder and Joe Durant posted 63s to grab the lead at the Verizon Byron Nelson Classic after round one. Five players are tied for second at 6 under.

Molder tied for ninth last week at the Compaq Classic of New Orleans. His Compaq earnings of $112,500 leaves him $167,377 short of David Morland IV's total of $279,877 (No. 150 on the Official Money List) from 2001. If Molder equals Morland's total of $279,877, he would be eligible to join the PGA TOUR as a Special Temporary Member, earning unlimited Sponsor Exemptions for the remainder of the 2002 season.
