30 Oct 2003 - 02 Nov 2003
Palm Harbor, Florida
Retief Goosen, the 10th-ranked player in the world coming into the event, vaulted into the top 10 on the 2003 PGA TOUR Money List with a three-shot victory Sunday in the first Chrysler Championship. Goosen matched TOUR money leader Vijay Singh, who finished second, with a final round 1-under par 70 to finish at 12-under 272.

Singh closed to within one shot of Goosen after 12 holes, but Goosen birdied the 13th and 14th holes while Singh parred to build back his lead to three. Goosen won $864,000 for his efforts while Singh banked $518,400 for his efforts.

Mike Weir collected $90,000 after shooting 67 for 281 and a tie for 13th.

Singh widened his lead on the Money List to $768,494 and can clinch the title with a third-place finish in next week’s TOUR Championship even if Woods were to claim victory in that elite 30-player event.

There was one change in the lineup for the TOUR Championship Sunday as Briny Baird claimed third place in the Chrysler with a 1-over 72 good for 8-under on the event. The strong finish vaulted Baird from 35th to 22nd on the Money List and displaced Rocco Mediate who missed the cut on Friday.

In other “top” news, Jeff Sluman moved up to 40th on the final list and earned a spot in the Masters, Glen Hnatiuk advanced into the top 125 to retain his playing card at the expense of Per-Ulrik Johansson and Jose Coceres and Thomas Levet moved into the top 125 to earn limited playing rights for 2004.
