Mike Weir-Dino Ciccarelli Charity Classic

29 Jul 2003 - 29 Jul 2003
Brights Grove, Ontario
The Event

July 29, 2003 marks the 9th year of the Mike Weir Dino Ciccarelli Charity Golf Classic. It is a rare opportunity to be up close to professional golfers and celebrities who attend this event at Huron Oaks Golf and Recreation Centre. The public is welcome to walk with the golfers on the course. Food and washroom facilities are available on the course. The main clubhouse will be closed for the day, requiring volunteer/participant access passes for anyone to enter.

Charity

All proceeds from the Mike Weir Dino Ciccarelli Charity Golf Classic are donated to Charity. The event is organized by a small group of volunteers who work year-round organizing the event, and is supported by the free contribution of time of all the celebrities and event-day volunteers.

The event benefits greatly from the financial and in-kind support of our major sponsors and many individuals and businesses throughout the Sarnia-Lambton area that give generously when asked for assistance.

The primary beneficiary of proceeds from this event is Sunshine Dreams for Kids a Canadian based organization that fulfills dreams for children with life threatening illnesses and severe physical disabilities. www.sunshine.ca The tournament also supports others youth sports and charities. In 2003 the tournament sponsored the Provincial Games for the Physically Disabled, held in Sarnia.

History

Originally called the Mike Weir Dino Ciccarelli Sarnia Sting Charity Golf Tournament, the event was launched in 1995.

At the time Dino Ciccarelli was preparing for his 16th season in the NHL, with the Detroit Red Wings and was a part owner of the Sarnia Sting hockey club. He retired after the 1999 season with career stats including 681 goals and 637 assists in the regular and post season combined.

The Sarnia Sting were preparing for their second season in Sarnia as the city’s Ontario Hockey League team, playing at the Sarnia Arena. They have since grown into a stature as one of the league’s best-run organizations.

Mike Weir was in his third season on the Canadian Professional Golf Tour, having won the rookie of the year award in 1993. He has won six times on the PGA Tour, including a World Golf Championship event, the 2001 Tour Championship and the 2003 Masters.

The event was a chance to raise money for charity and allow all three individuals and organizations to give back to the community and youth, with a fun day of golf. More than $13,000 was raised that year.

With the growth of the tournament it was decided in 2002 that the Sarnia Sting would start yet another great summer tradition, hosting its own golf tournament along with its many sponsors and fans.

Mike and Dino are continuing on the great tradition of playing host to one of Canada’s premier charity golf events.

Over the first eight years, $370,000 has been raised by the tournament for charity.
