84 Lumber Classic
23 Sep 2004 - 26 Sep 2004Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, Farmington, Pa.
The owners have made significant changes to the Mystic Rock course that played pretty easy last year. J.L Lewis won the 2003 event at 22-under par. With all of the rain in the area, the fairways are quite soft but the greens are the firmest surfaces we have seen all year. It is going to be very difficult to hold shots on the green.
On the front side the second hole is a very demanding par 4, with water guarding the right side off the tee, leaving a mid-iron in for second shot to a long skinny green that slopes from front to back. Both par 3’s on the front can play up to three or maybe four iron distance. Very difficult to get the ball close to the hole.
Number 11 is a 610 yard par 5 that has water all down the right side. This hole that can cause a lot of trouble and will yield some big numbers this week. Number 16 is a reachable par 5. The green has water all around the left side and around the back so a long shot is no good. Problem is going to be keeping the ball on the putting surface with the second shot.
Number 17 is a mid-iron par 3 with water up the left side of the green and the green sloping toward the water. Bail out area off the tee is right but leaves difficult chip. Number 18 is a new hole this year. 460 yard par 4 uphill into a long skinny green. It has a pretty narrow fairway that requires a good drive leaving a mid iron into a severely sloped green.
Overall the key this week in my opinion will be to have a fantastic short game. Greens are so hard that lots of approach shots will be rolling off and into the rough.
Winning prediction -11under par.
We are looking forward to playing with the No. 1 player in the world, Vijay Singh during the opening two rounds of the tournament.
