2016 Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids a Hole in One for Children’s Hospital

London, Ont. – Mike Weir was in town June 5 and 6 to do what he does best – play golf and raise funds in support of children’s health care. Along with golfers young and old, family members, donors and volunteers, he golfed at Sunningdale Golf and Country Club for his 10th Annual Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive For Kids. Champions in our community hit a ‘hole-in-one,’ raising $504,376 (net) over this two-day event for Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre.

Consisting of two tournaments – one “fore the kids” and one “fore the adults” – the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids engaged community members as young as 5 years old. The kids participated in a fun day of golf and high-energy activities on Sunday to raise $27,468 through pledges for their peers. Before the adult tournament kicked off on Monday, Mike Weir held a special golf clinic for the golfers, hosted by TSN SPORTSCENTRE host Cory Woron.

Funds raised at the tournament will directly benefit kids at Children’s Hospital, supporting their emotional, physical and psychological well-being through specialized equipment and value-added priority programs and services. Children’s Hospital is the regional paediatric referral centre for Southwestern Ontario and parts of Northern Ontario, serving a population base of 2.3 million people, including over 400,000 children.

“Ten years have gone by since the first Mike Weir Miracle Drive for Kids, held right here in London. When I toured Children’s Hospital this morning it brought this whole event full circle. The smiling faces of young patients, the hardworking staff and the feeling of compassion that can be felt as soon as you walk in the doors – all a reality because of the first tournament which supported the building of the new Children’s Hospital tower, opened in 2011. I am overjoyed by how this tournament has transformed the lives of Canadian children over the past 10 years, and inspired to see its potential as we continue striving for our $10 million goal,” shared Mike Weir.

“I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mike Weir, The Mike Weir Foundation and Children’s Miracle Network for your dedication to paediatric health care in Canada, including right here at our own Children’s Hospital in London,” expressed Susan Crowley, President and CEO, Children’s Health Foundation. “We are so honoured that you chose to bring the tournament back to London for its 10th year.”

Since 2007, the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids has raised over $5 million for Children’s Miracle Network partner hospitals across Canada.

MIKE WEIR

Mike Weir emerged as one of the game’s brightest stars with his 2003 Masters victory after a dramatic playoff win over Len Mattiace. He came back to a hero’s welcome in Canada which included dropping the ceremonial face-off puck at a Toronto Maple Leafs playoff game, the perfect ‘Canadian-style’ celebration for the die-hard hockey fan. His breakthrough year on the PGA Tour earned him the 2003 Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s top athlete of the year and his third Lionel Conacher Award as Canada’s top male athlete of the year. Weir began using his success as a professional golfer as a platform for helping other families in need with the creation of The Mike Weir Foundation in 2004. Three years later, Mike launched a national fundraising program through his foundation called the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids, supporting Children’s Miracle Network member hospitals in Canada.

On a national level, Weir’s success and contributions through charitable work have been recognized with two Order of Canada inductions (2007, 2009). In 2009, Weir also became an inductee into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. Weir has enjoyed success in golf unmatched by any other Canadian but says there is still plenty of work to do since his goal is to be one of the best in the world.

Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids is coming to Calgary

Calgary, AB – Canadian PGA golfer and Masters champion Mike Weir is bringing his charity tournament to Calgary this summer in support of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. Registration is now open for the event, taking place June 22 at Silver Springs Golf & Country Club.

In 2007, The Mike Weir Foundation and Children’s Miracle Network set an ambitious goal to raise $10 million for Canadian pediatric healthcare. Since then, the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids has raised more than $4,788,000 to support innovative programs, state-of-the-art equipment and groundbreaking pediatric research at children’s hospitals across the country. “I am excited to be bringing the 9th annual Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids to Calgary this June,” says Weir. “I am confident this great community will rally behind the kids who need the Alberta Children’s Hospital, so we are looking forward to a very memorable – and meaningful – day of golf.”

“We are thrilled that Calgary is the next host for this incredible tournament and that the families who are cared for at the Alberta Children’s Hospital will be supported by this amazing initiative,” says Saifa Koonar, President and CEO of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Fred Mattersdorfer and Elizabeth Williams know first-hand how important that support is. Shortly after their son, Will, was born, he was diagnosed with an extremely rare condition that prevented him from swallowing and eating. The team at the Alberta Children’s Hospital performed surgeries, installed feeding tubes, and taught his parents how to manage his feeds at home. Today, Will eats everything on his plate and is a happy, healthy two-year-old with a real knack for sports. “I can’t imagine what our path would have been without the expertise and care of the NICU team and other specialty clinics at the Alberta Children’s Hospital,” says Williams. “The support from the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids will go a long way to make what is an already outstanding hospital even better for sick and injured children in our community and we are so very grateful.”

Mike Weir charity event raises more than $694,000 for needed expansion of operating rooms at Stollery Children’s Hospital

EDMONTON (September 17, 2014)—Golfers of all ages hit the links at the Edmonton Country Club on September 14th and 15th in support of some of the sickest children in Canada. The 8th annual Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids presented by Mac & Mitch Homes attracted more than 200 golfers, some as young as seven, to help raise $694,452 for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. All proceeds go toward the Foundation’s Critical for Care expansion plans at the Stollery in support of provincial funding to double the number of pediatric operating rooms from five to 10 over the next three years.

“From sharing a smile with some of the patients at the Stollery to shaking the hands of many of the kids responsible for raising money through the Miracle Kids Junior Tournament, I am truly impressed and inspired by the community spirit that exists in the Edmonton area,” says Mike Weir. “After eight years of touring this charity tournament across Canada, the open hearts and caring nature of individuals who rally around a cause to create meaningful change in the life of a child never ceases to amaze me. I want to thank everyone who participated in making this tournament such a success and for helping to fund much-needed expansion at this amazing facility.”

“Having Mike Weir here was an inspiration to so many people who wanted to be a part of something special in support of kids from across Western Canada who benefit from this exceptional Hospital,” says Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation President and CEO Mike House. “With more than 9,000 surgeries at the Stollery annually, this amazing gift will help to expand pediatric operating room beds and patient and family care space, while ensuring quality health outcomes for children for generations to come.”

The Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids, in partnership with Children’s Miracle Network, included a Miracle Kids Tournament where junior golfers, ages of seven to 17, raised more than $23,000, and took part in a 6-hole tournament and BBQ hosted by the Masters Champion. Mike Weir also conducted an hour-long clinic the following day before teeing off with hundreds of enthusiastic Stollery supporters.

Since its inception in 2004, The Mike Weir Foundation has raised more than $5 million for children’s health and wellness, including more than $4 million for pediatric health care. The Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids aims to raise $10 million in support of children’s hospitals across Canada.

The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation is committed to funding excellence at the Stollery Children’s Hospital: specialized equipment; sub-specialty education to train the brightest medical minds; research to pave the way to the discovery of new treatments and cures; and specialized pediatric programs that enhance family centred care, and patient and family outcomes.

March 1, 2014 marks the 10th Anniversary of the creation of The Mike Weir Foundation, dedicated to advancing the physical, emotional and educational welfare of children in Canada.

Since inception and through the support of our generous sponsors and donors we are proud to report that over $5 million has been raised for children’s wellness with over $3 million of support being provided for children’s health care and related causes.

Numerous local and national children’s charities have received support from The Mike Weir Foundation. Beyond direct contributions, the Foundation also helps charities raise money through its Weir Golf Memorabilia program which helps charities obtain auction items for fundraising purposes.

In 2007, The Mike Weir Foundation held the inaugural Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids to raise funds for the Children’s Health Foundation in London, Ontario. The Mike Weir Foundation partnered with Children Miracle Network to help raise funds for its 14 children’s hospital members in Canada. These hospitals provide critical care, research and education and treat over 2.6 million children each year. The Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids is one of the largest golf fundraisers in Canada and has already raised over $4.3 million for Children’s Miracle Network foundations. In 2014 the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids will be in Edmonton raising money for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and the 2015 event will be held in Calgary raising money for Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids has a single mission – to be golf’s premiere fund raising initiative to support children’s healthcare across Canada. The goal for this event is to raise awareness and funds for Children’s Miracle Network who in turn supports 14 children’s hospitals across Canada by funding excellence in care, world class research and life-saving equipment. All in support of their mission to save and improve kids lives.

The Mike Weir Foundation and Children’s Miracle Network have joined forces to create something never done before in the golf community – a concerted national effort to raise $10 million for pediatric healthcare.

Your involvement is crucial to making this initiative successful. Funds generated will help the local Children’s Miracle Network member hospital in your community.
